SITESELECT®
(Stereotactic Breast Biopsy System)

Breast Biopsy
Q:
What is a breast biopsy?
A: If a suspicious lesion (tissue abnormality) is found in your breast, your doctor will typically request that a biopsy be performed. A biopsy is the removal of tissue for examination. This examination is performed to determine if the lesion is benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). While as many as 1 million American women undergo breast biopsies each year, approximately 80% are benign (not cancerous).

Q: What is SiteSelect®?
A:
SiteSelect is a new breast biopsy system, cleared by the FDA for use, which is designed to sample and remove a non-palpable breast lesion (seen on a mammogram, but not felt). The SiteSelect device removes a targeted core of breast tissue for analysis.

Q: What is the procedure like?
A:
The SiteSelect procedure is performed in a special procedure room, under local anesthesia - you are awake during the procedure. You will lie face-down on a specially designed treatment table which utilizes a computer guided targeting system which locates the target site using a 3-D approach. During the procedure, a wire is placed at the target location. Then, the SiteSelect device is advanced to the specific target. The SiteSelect removes a single core of targeted tissue, but leaves behind the healthy breast tissue. Most patients report minimal to no pain during the procedure (although you may feel a bit of pressure).

Q: How long does the procedure take?
A: Your entire procedure, including the x-ray targeting of the lesion may take between 60 and 90 minutes. The SiteSelect procedure itself will typically take approximately 30 minutes.

Q: What can I expect following the SiteSelect procedure?
A:
You may experience minimal to no pain following the SiteSelect procedure.

Q: How do I get the results of my biopsy?
A: You will be informed by your surgeon/radiologist of the results of your biopsy. Ask your doctor when your biopsy results will be ready.

Q: Am I a candidate for SiteSelect for my breast biopsy?
A: Only your doctor can determine whether SiteSelect is an appropriate device for your breast biopsy. Ask your doctor to discuss all options for your biopsy procedure with you.
